Class Experience

In this online class, we will use dolls or puppets to talk about our emotions, including happiness, sadness, anger, and excitement. Children in this age group can be taught how to manage their emotions through dramatic play and guidance. Parents are highly encouraged to participate with the students as additional role models and to allow for follow up at home. Students will be able to observe the teacher and others in the class and share their thoughts and ideas. In 8 sessions, we will cover how to be ok with feeling sad or angry; how to handle our excitement or the excitement of others; how our emotions and behavior impact others; and how we can feel good about ourselves. As a special education teacher and the parent of a child on the ASD spectrum, as well, I have found that using direct instruction is an effective way to assist all young children with emotional regulation.

Learning Goals

Students will be able to identify four major emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, and excitement in themselves and others. Students will practice strategies to help themselves cope with the big emotions, as well as strategies to cope with the emotions of others, i.e. My brother is angry. How should I respond?

As a special education teacher for 26 years, one of the biggest concerns that teachers have consistently expressed relates to students managing their emotional responses or their level of emotional regulation. I have used multiple programs for emotional identification and management, and I will utilize the programs that are most effective for the needs of your child!
