Class Experience

During this one time, live online course, students will be introduced to coping strategies for use in their everyday lives. Students will also identify feelings during this class. By the end of the course, students will have gained knowledge of many coping strategies for use to handle several emotions. Students will learn why coping skills are important. Students will also walk away from the class with a list of coping strategies for when they are mad, envious, sad, angry, lonely, depressed, etc.

There is no background knowledge required, just come to class prepared to learn. As this is a one session course, there will be no homework assigned. Progress is evaluated through classroom participation.

Overview: Everyday we experience several different feelings throughout the day. This course will assist students in identifying those feelings. This course will also introduce students to a variety of coping skills to help regulate their emotions.

Methodology: The class session will begin with an icebreaker to encourage students to feel comfortable speaking to the class. During the course, the students will be shown a presentation that incorporates multiple modalities (text, video, audio, etc.). The handouts for the presentation will be made available for you to print (printing is optional). Throughout the presentation, there will be stopping points for discussions related to the topic. Students will engage in on-topic discussions with their instructor as well as peers. Students will be offered the opportunity to ask questions, as well as opportunities to further explore the material through brief tasks. Students will practice their public speaking skills as they address their classmates and instructor during the course. During this course, students will work together to develop a list of coping strategies. A handout with multiple coping strategies will also be made available for you to print (printing is optional).

Learner Time: 50 minutes for one class session, and 0 hours per week outside of class.

Parental Guidance
This course incorporates the use of brief YouTube videos. While the content is appropriate to the class, I feel parents should be aware that they are incorporated into the lecture portion of this course. This course is a combination of lecture and discussion. This course relies heavily on classroom discussion for about half of the classroom time. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the discussion.
