Class Experience

We all know that modeling clay is a fun material for building and sculpting, but have you ever thought of different uses for it? In this fun, interactive, one-time class for ages 6-9, young artists will use a variety of materials from around the home, modeling clay, and stamp pads to make prints (see below for full material list). Learners will make discoveries through viewing examples, guided discussion, and using their senses. This project emphasizes the element of texture, but we will also discuss and learn about printmaking and the principles of repetition/pattern. I will show how to make the prints, then learners will make their own. We will discuss our observations throughout the creative process. We will focus on the experience of making art in this project, and this is a highly experimental process - all results will be different, and the final product may not be "perfect." I will invite students to share their artwork as they go along and at the end of class if they feel comfortable doing so. Students can apply what they learn to artworks they make outside of class. Please note that your learner may get messy hands while creating.

Hello! Thank you for visiting my profile. My name is Valerie Cofer, and I am an art teacher based in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee, USA. I am a mother, grandmother, and cat lover. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with family and pets, watching sci-fi series on TV (Doctor Who and The Mandalorian are favorites), photography, cooking, and being in nature.

I possess a wealth of teaching experience to share. After graduating with a BFA from the University of West Georgia, I embarked on a 15-year career as an art educator. I taught well over 2,000 young artists in my time in the physical classroom. We explored many materials and techniques in my art classes. Since January 2020, I have been enjoying teaching ESL online. Teaching with Outschool combines both worlds, and I’m excited to bring my skills and abilities to the virtual classroom.

My goal is to offer lessons for learners that are full of fun and discovery. I aim to focus less on drawing and formal skills and more on the process and experience of making art. Children have an innate desire to create, regardless of age and skill level. Exploring art helps learners to understand, appreciate, and connect with the world around them. Art is a communication tool and an emotional outlet. Learning in art helps build creativity and problem-solving skills. Above all, making art is fun. I love seeing children discover something new and how each of their solutions is unique. Please let me know if you are interested in enrolling your learner in any of my classes outside of the times they are listed. I may be able to accommodate your schedule. I look forward to seeing your learner in the classroom soon!
