In week one, the students will learn how to control the board using their Rooks to make a Two Rook Checkmate. In week two, they will learn how to checkmate with a King and a Queen. In week three, the students will learn how to checkmate with a King and one Rook, using Tempo moves. In week four, they will learn that Tactics are traps that you set up to win pieces and to get a better position on the board. They will learn how to create a Skewer by attacking a piece, so that when it moves out of the way, the piece behind it will be captured. In the last half of each class, the students will get to practice their chess skills on the lichess.org website, which is a FREE site. The teacher will provide the students with a username, password, and directions on how to access the lichess.org website.
Learning Goals
The student's chess skills will continue to improve with more knowledge about the game, practicing more checkmates, and learn about tactics. They will strengthen their game even more by playing against other students or the teacher on-line via the lichess.org website.

Students should have a pencil with an eraser in class and a folder to keep all their chess curriculum and homework puzzles together.

The students will be using the lichess.org website to practice various checkmates and to play games against each other or the teacher. This is a FREE site for students to access to improve their chess skills. ChessKid.com is also a great resource for students to access daily Chess Puzzles, to play chess against the computer, or against other students around the world. There are videos on this site that the students can watch, done by Grand Masters, who can really help the student achieve a higher skill level in chess.

I love to see how Chess helps the brain to think, to make predictions, to sequence, see patterns, etc. I love to see when a student learns how to checkmate and improves upon their game!
