Cool Chess! Intermediate 1 Lesson 5--Tactics: Skewers!
Class experience
US Grade 2 - 5
Intermediate Level
The students will be learning about the Skewer, or X-Ray Attack--a powerful Chess Tactic. A Tactic is a trap that a player sets to win pieces or to get a better position on the board. They will learn that just as a skewer or rod can go through a piece of meat, a skewer on the chess board is one piece "going through" another piece to get to the piece behind it. Skewers are the most powerful when they attack a King, the King has to move out of the way, and a piece is captured behind the King....
The students will become stronger chess players as they learn how to master Skewers and by playing chess games on-line.
Homework Offered
Students will receive chess puzzle sheets to be printed out. The chess puzzle sheets will be discussed in class to make sure all students understand how to solve them.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
A learner is assessed by understanding the answers on each chess puzzle sheet and knowing how to checkmate to win their games. When a student practices chess at home with others, or on-line, their skills will increase--this will reflect in their knowledge of the game.Grades Offered
2 files available upon enrollmentStudents should have a pencil in class and the chess puzzles printed out, which will be attached in a PDF form in the Classroom.

ChessKid.com is an additional resource that can help the students to improve their chess skills. This website provides Chess Puzzles, practice against chess bots, and informative videos which are made by Grand Masters.
