1 hour per week. Students will receive chess puzzle sheets to be printed out. The chess puzzle sheets will be discussed in class to make sure all students understand how to solve them.Assessment
A learner is assessed by understanding the answers on each chess puzzle sheet and knowing how to checkmate to win their games. When a student practices chess at home with others, or on-line, their skills will increase--this will reflect in their knowledge of the game.Class Experience
In this lesson, the students will learn about two King and Pawn Endings. In the first scenario, the students will learn how to get a stalemate if they only have their King left. In the second scenario, the students will learn how to successfully protect their pawn in order to promote it to a Queen and win the game. By studying and practicing these King and Pawn Endings, the students will be more successful in their chess games. At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to play chess against other Outschool students, or the teacher, on the chess.org website.
Learning Goals
The students will become stronger chess players as they practice these King and Pawn Endings on the board and by playing chess games on-line.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
We will be using the lichess.org website for students to play chess games on-line. The students will be copying the game link and pasting it in the Zoom Chat Box for other students to click on and access the game. Usernames and passwords to lichess.org will not be used for this class.
Supply List
Students should have a pencil in class and the chess puzzles printed out, which will be attached in a PDF form in the Classroom.
