1 hour per week. Students will receive chess puzzle sheets to be printed out. The chess puzzle sheets will be discussed in class to make sure all students understand how to solve them.Assessment
A learner is assessed by understanding the answers on each chess puzzle sheet and knowing how to checkmate to win their games. When a student practices chess at home with others, or on-line, their skills will increase--this will reflect in their knowledge of the game.Class Experience
US Grade 2 - 5
Intermediate Level
In this lesson, the students will learn to checkmate in tricky positions by castling, underpromoting their pawn, or by an En Passant pawn capture. The students will be reminded of the rules of these special moves. When the students learn to recognize these special moves, they can improve their chances of winning more games. This lesson will teach the students to look over the entire board, to see everything and to expect anything! At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to play chess against other Outschool students, or the teacher, on the chess.org website.
Learning Goals
The students will become stronger chess players as they learn how to checkmate in tricky positions by castling, underpromoting their pawn, or by an En Passant pawn capture and by playing chess games on-line.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
We will be using the lichess.org website for students to play chess games on-line. The students will be copying the game link and pasting it in the Zoom Chat Box for other students to click on and access the game. Usernames and passwords to lichess.org will not be used for this class.
Supply List
Students should have a pencil in class and the chess puzzles printed out, which will be attached in a PDF form in the Classroom.
