The students will learn about the Spanish Chess Master, Ruy Lopez, the chess Opening named after him, and the King's Gambit Opening.

Class experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Intermediate Level
The students will become stronger chess players as they practice different openings on the board and by playing chess games on-line.
Homework Offered
A chess puzzle homework sheet will be attached in the Classroom, ready for the students to print out. The homework will be discussed during class to make sure all students understand how to solve the puzzles.

Assessments Offered
A learner is assessed by understanding the answers on each chess puzzle assignment and knowing how to checkmate to win their games. When a student practices chess at home with others, or on-line, their skills will increase--this will reflect in their knowledge of the game.

Students should have a pencil in class and the chess puzzles printed out, which will be attached in a PDF form in the Classroom.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
We will be using the lichess.org website for students to play chess games on-line. The students will be copying the game link and pasting it in the Zoom Chat Box for other students to click on and access the game. Usernames and passwords to lichess.org will not be used for this class.
ChessKid.com is an additional resource that can help the students to improve their chess skills. This website provides Chess Puzzles, practice against chess bots, and informative videos which are made by Grand Masters.
