What's included
1 live meeting
1 in-class hoursHomework
1 hour per week. A chess puzzle homework sheet will be attached in the Classroom, ready for the students to print out. The homework will be discussed during class to make sure all students understand how to solve the puzzles.Assessment
A learner is assessed by understanding the answers on each chess puzzle assignment and knowing how to checkmate to win their games. When a student practices chess at home with others, or on-line, their skills will increase--this will reflect in their knowledge of the game.Class Experience
US Grade 2 - 5
Intermediate Level
In this lesson, the students will learn about the Ruy Lopez Chess Opening, named after the Spanish Chess player, Ruy Lopez de Segura. The students will learn that Lopez published his own chess book in 1561 and that he mentioned some of the same standard rules that are still in use today. The students will also learn about the King's Gambit Opening. By studying and practicing different chess openings, the students will gain more experience in how to defeat their opponents. At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to play chess against other Outschool students, or the teacher, using the lichess.org website.
Learning Goals
The students will become stronger chess players as they practice different openings on the board and by playing chess games on-line.

I am a retired public school teacher of 26 years and currently am a Supervisor of Academic Programming for the Central New York Chess organization on Outschool (https://outschool.com/teachers/CENTRAL-NY-CHESS-INC?usid=wUq7nkLS&signup=true&authTrigger=follow_teacher&follow=true&utm_campaign=share_leader_link). I have taught children and adults in Beginning and Intermediate 1 Chess classes for 23 years in after school programs, summer Chess Camps, online in my Cool Chess classes and now for Central New York Chess. I love to see how Chess helps the brain to think, to make predictions, to sequence, see patterns, etc. I love to see when a student learns how to checkmate and improves upon their game! I teach One Time Cool Chess classes and Private and Multi-Day Classes with Central New York Chess. I enjoy Art, Chess, Scrapbooking, and Travel! I hope to see you in my chess classes soon!
