Cool Chess History 2: The Ruy Lopez and the King's Gambit Openings--Ages 13-18
Class experience
In this lesson, the students will learn about the Ruy Lopez Chess Opening. They will learn about the Spanish Chess player, Ruy Lopez de Segura, who had this opening named after him. He published his own chess book in 1561. In his book, Lopez proposed that the Touch Move Rule be standard in all games and discussed the 50 Move Rule. In the last part of class, the students will be using the lichess.org website to play chess games against each other. The teacher will give a username and password to each student in order to login to the website by posting it privately in their Chat Box.
The student will be using the lichess.org website to practice various checkmates and to play games against other students or the teacher. This is a FREE site for students to access and to improve their chess skills. ChessKid.com is also a great resource for students to access daily Chess Puzzles, to play chess against the computer, or against other students around the world. There are videos on this site that the students can watch, done by Grand Masters, who can really help the student achieve a higher skill level in chess.
