Cool Chess History 1-- Pedro Damiano: The Giuoco Piano Opening--Ages 7-12
The students will learn about the chess master, Pedro Damiano and his use of the Giuoco Piano Opening.
US Grade 2 - 5
In this lesson, the students will learn about the Portuguese Chess player, Pedro Damiano, and how he analyzed the Giuoco Piano Opening in his chess book, published in 1512. Damiano presented the rules of the game and other helpful chess tips in his book. By studying and practicing different chess openings, the students will gain more experience in how to defeat their opponents. At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to play chess against other Outschool students, or the teacher,...
The students will become stronger chess players as they practice different openings on the board and by playing chess games on-line.
Homework OfferedStudents will receive chess puzzles to help them study one-move checkmates. These puzzles will be attached in the Classroom. The chess puzzles will be discussed in the last few minutes of class to make sure all students understand how to solve them.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments OfferedLearners are assessed by understanding the answers on each chess puzzle assignment and knowing how to checkmate to win their games. When learners practice chess at home with others, or on-line, their skills will increase--this will reflect in their knowledge of the game.
1 file available upon enrollmentStudents should have a pencil in class and the chess puzzles printed out, which will be attached in a PDF form in the Classroom.
We will be using the lichess.org website for students to play chess games on-line. The students will be copying the game link and pasting it in the Zoom Chat Box for other students to click on and access the game. Usernames and passwords to lichess.org will not be used for this class.
ChessKid.com is an additional resource that can help the students to improve their chess skills. This website provides Chess Puzzles, practice against chess bots, and informative videos which are made by Grand Masters.
