What's included
1 live meeting
1 in-class hoursHomework
1 hour per week. Students will receive chess puzzle sheets to be printed out. The chess puzzle sheets will be discussed in class to make sure all students understand how to solve them.Assessment
A learner is assessed by understanding the answers on each chess puzzle sheet and knowing how to checkmate to win their games. When a student practices chess at home with others, or on-line, their skills will increase--this will reflect in their knowledge of the game.Class Experience
US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner Level
The students will learn that the Smothered Mate happens when a King is surrounded by his own pieces (smothered by them) and is attacked by the Knight. The King has no escape square and none of the King's pieces can capture the Knight. Smothered Mates can happen anytime during the game if the position is right. The students will learn about the scenario, in which a double check occurs, forcing the opponents King in the corner. The Queen will be captured (sacrificed) by the opponent's Rook, surrounding the opponent's King by his own pieces. Then the Knight moves, shooting his attack up over the opponent's pieces, right to the heart of the King--checkmate!
Learning Goals
The students will learn that the Smothered Mate is one of the basic checkmates that every Chess player should master. Studying this checkmate will help the students to see patterns in their games, to recognize possible attacks, and to know how to prevent this from happening.

I am a retired public school teacher of 26 years and currently am a Supervisor of Academic Programming for the Central New York Chess organization on Outschool (https://outschool.com/teachers/CENTRAL-NY-CHESS-INC?usid=wUq7nkLS&signup=true&authTrigger=follow_teacher&follow=true&utm_campaign=share_leader_link). I have taught children and adults in Beginning and Intermediate 1 Chess classes for 23 years in after school programs, summer Chess Camps, online in my Cool Chess classes and now for Central New York Chess. I love to see how Chess helps the brain to think, to make predictions, to sequence, see patterns, etc. I love to see when a student learns how to checkmate and improves upon their game! I teach One Time Cool Chess classes and Private and Multi-Day Classes with Central New York Chess. I enjoy Art, Chess, Scrapbooking, and Travel! I hope to see you in my chess classes soon!
