What's included

1 live meeting
1 in-class hours
Homework
1 hour per week. Students will receive chess puzzle sheets to be printed out. The chess puzzle sheets will be discussed in class to make sure all students understand how to solve them.
Assessment
A learner is assessed by understanding the answers on each chess puzzle sheet and knowing how to checkmate to win their games. When a student practices chess at home with others, or on-line, their skills will increase--this will reflect in their knowledge of the game.

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner Level
The students will learn about the Danger Square Checkmates--the Scholars's Mate (or, the Four-Move Checkmate) and the Fool's Mate. They will learn that the two Danger Squares are the f7 and f2 squares on the board. The students will find out that these are the two squares on the board that are only guarded by the King at the beginning of the game. The students will learn how to make the Scholar's Mate and the Fool's Mate and learn how to defend against it. The students will learn why the Fool's Mate is called that how to make wise, not foolish decisions on the chessboard.

Learning Goals

The students will improve their chess knowledge by learning The Scholar's Mate and Fool's Mate. These are basic checkmates to learn so that the students will not lose their games so quickly. Strategies will be taught so the students will be able to execute these checkmates and know how to defend themselves in these situations.

I am a retired public school teacher of 26 years and currently am a Supervisor of Academic Programming for the Central New York Chess organization on Outschool (https://outschool.com/teachers/CENTRAL-NY-CHESS-INC?usid=wUq7nkLS&signup=true&authTrigger=follow_teacher&follow=true&utm_campaign=share_leader_link). I have taught children and adults in Beginning and Intermediate 1 Chess classes for 23 years in after school programs, summer Chess Camps, online in my Cool Chess classes and now for Central New York Chess. I love to see how Chess helps the brain to think, to make predictions, to sequence, see patterns, etc. I love to see when a student learns how to checkmate and improves upon their game! I teach One Time Cool Chess classes and Private and Multi-Day Classes with Central New York Chess. I enjoy Art, Chess, Scrapbooking, and Travel! I hope to see you in my chess classes soon!
