Cool Chess! Beginner 1 Lesson 5--Draw Games and Stalemates!--Ages 13-18
Class experience
The students will learn the difference between checkmate, draw games and stalemates. They will learn that Draw games and stalemates are tie games--that nobody wins. The students will learn that they will receive a half point for a Draw game or a Stalemate and one point for a checkmate. A discussion will also be had about the student not resigning his games because his opponent may not know how to checkmate. By learning the difference between a checkmate, draw game and a stalemate, the students will improve their game by looking for ways to prevent a draw game from happening and to instead, look for ways to checkmate.
Homework Offered
Students will receive chess puzzle homework sheets in a PDF format to be printed out. The chess puzzle homework sheets will be discussed in class to make sure all students understand what to do.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
A learner is assessed by understanding the answers on each chess puzzle assignment and knowing how to checkmate to win their games. When a student practices chess at home with others, or on-line, their skills will increase--this will reflect in their knowledge of the game.Grades Offered

If students do not already have a username on lichess.org, a username will be assigned to the students by the teacher.
Lichess.org and ChessKid.com are great, safe resources to access daily Chess Puzzles, to play chess against the computer, or against other chess players around the world. There are videos on the ChessKid.com site that the students can watch, done by Grand Masters, who can really help the students achieve a higher skill level in chess.
