Cool Chess! Beginner 1 Lesson 4--The Staircase Checkmate

Beginner Level
The students will learn how to do the Staircase checkmate using the two rooks on the chessboard. Their two rooks will work together to control the board by attacking the ranks or files, force the King to the edge of the board, and then to checkmate. The students will learn that there is a pattern to checkmating the King with the two rooks. The teacher will set up a 2-Rook puzzle and the students will call out the moves to master this checkmate. The students will learn to master the sequence of the Staircase Checkmate which will make their game stronger.
Homework Offered
Students will receive chess puzzle homework sheets in a PDF format to be printed out. The chess puzzle homework sheets will be discussed in class to make sure all students understand what to do.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
A learner is assessed by understanding the answers on each chess puzzle assignment and knowing how to checkmate to win their games. When a student practices chess at home, with others, or on-line, their skills will increase--this will reflect in their knowledge of the game.Grades Offered

We will be using the lichess.org website for students to play chess games on-line. The students will be copying the game link and pasting it in the Zoom Chat Box for other students to click on and access the game. Usernames and passwords to lichess.org will not be used for this class.
ChessKid.com is an additional resource that can help the student to improve their chess skills. This website provides Chess Puzzles, practice against chess bots, and informative videos which are made by Grand Masters.
