The students will learn that castling is a very special move that protects the King. It is the only time that two pieces, the King and the Rook, can move at the same time and yet call it one move. The students will learn that it is the only time when the King can move two spaces. They will learn that they have to touch the King first, and then the Rook, according to the United States Chess Federation rules. The students will learn the importance of castling their King for protection and how it makes their games stronger. They will learn that when playing chess against an opponent or a computer, that they will have to touch the King first.
Students will receive chess puzzle homework sheets in a PDF format to be printed out. The chess puzzle homework sheets will be discussed in class to make sure all students understand what to do.

A learner is assessed by understanding the answers on each chess puzzle assignment and knowing how to checkmate to win their games. When a student practices chess at home, with others, or on-line, their skills will increase--this will reflect in their knowledge of the game.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
We will be using the lichess.org website for students to play chess games on-line. The students will be copying the game link and pasting it in the Zoom Chat Box for other students to click on and access the game. Usernames and passwords to lichess.org will not be used for this class.
ChessKid.com is an additional resource that can help the student to improve their chess skills. This website provides Chess Puzzles, practice against chess bots, and informative videos which are made by Grand Masters.
