Students will prepare a "raw snack recipe" that is delicious, quick and nutritious that does not require using "fire" from the stove!

Class Experience

***Attention Parents:  Please be aware that the "Cooking ..W/O ..Fire!" recipes being presented "do" include "fruits, nuts, seeds, and spices" that may or may not affect your child.  Please ask about possible substitutions for items that could cause reactions.***

The experience for today is to guide students in preparing a new "raw" food recipe item:  "Chia Seed Pudding".  We will begin by reviewing  any vocabulary words that are needed for making healthy,  informed, food choices, and for the cooking lesson.  

Vocabulary Words:  refined, processed, immune system, digestive tract, fiber, fat, protein
 
Review:  Units of measurement used in the recipe. 

The teacher will lead the students through a short lesson on the nutritional value of the main ingredients in the recipe:  Walnuts, dates, raw cacao powder, sea salt.  Step by step guidance, if necessary, will be given to the collective group of students.
A parent or other adult may assist or be on call to do so, if the student needs help in accomplishing this activity.  
The necessary supplies are listed here, and on the recipe sheet - "Chia Seed Pudding".  

 
Print a copy of the recipe at the end of the lesson (See added files)   

Parents can review the list for ingredients to be purchased for the lesson, and non - food items required for completing the recipe:       

Chia Seed Pudding Recipe
What You’ll Need Is:                                                                 
½ cup Chia Seeds
1/4 cup Cacao Powder or unsweetened Chocolate Powder
1-1/2-2 Tbsp Maple Syrup (Grade B or Honey)
½ tsp Vanilla Extract
½ tsp Ground Cinnamon (Optional)
1 pinch Sea Salt
1-1/2 cups Almond Milk* or Light Coconut Milk

Instructions:  
1. Measure dry ingredients and place in a small mixing bowl.            
2. Whisk to combine.                                                                                      
3. Assemble “wet” ingredients: (vanilla, maple syrup and milk).                                                                                
4. Add vanilla and maple syrup and whisk to combine.                                                                               
5, Add chia seeds and whisk again.	                                                   
6. Cover the bowl and place in the refrigerator for 30-45 minutes.	
		
This pudding can be used for “breakfast”, “snack”, or “dessert, so let’s
 create your own topping to enhance the flavor of your pudding.

1.  Read the instructions completely through BEFORE the class begins.
2.  Set out all of the utensils and ingredients needed for the recipe.
3.  Practice measuring the ingredients using the appropriate kitchen tools.
4.  Read and follow the directions to prepare the "Chia Seed Pudding".

Supply List
Purchase the ingredients on the supply list for the recipe. Please note:  We will be making the "Chia Seed Pudding".  (Several items may be in your kitchen cabinets already.)  Be sure to print out the recipe sheet to purchase the ingredients needed.

I am offering this class to give students practical experiences of "Cooking Without Fire!"  Raw foods are healthy choices for children to make, and the more opportunity they have to try new things, foods, methods of preparations, the more likely they are to develop a habit of choosing healthy foods that they "know something" about.
