Class experience

I LOVE cooking as a learning activity because as well as learning cooking (an all important life skill), there is so much other authentic learning involved. There are just so many academic and personal learning strands included. I think the MOST important one is student agency, competence and creativity as they get total (guided) autonomy in the kitchen.

Students will learn a range of cooking skills including:
* using the stove top safely
* using the oven safely
* using knives safely
* using blenders and food processors
* using graters, peelers and other relevant kitchen appliances

Students will learn a range of 21st Century Skills such as:
* multi-tasking
* taking initiative
* self-awareness
* self-management
* help seeking
* recognising need for help
* assertiveness
* understanding your own skills and capabilities
* recognising your skill development areas

Included implicit academic learning:
* Learning about sustainable patterns of living
* Maths - Measurement and estimation
* Maths - Simple fractions, multiplication and division
* English - Reading - procedural texts. Reading ingredient lists and cooking times
* English - Writing - Lists.
* English - Researching, Planning, Negotiating and Communicating.
* English - Following verbal and written instructions.
* Science - Chemical Sciences - Physical properties of natural and processed materials.
* Health - Food and Nutrition.
* Wellbeing - looking after your body by eating a balanced diet.

A list of ingredients will be sent out to learners for each week after the previous class. If you are thinking about joining the class you are welcome to message me to find out the supply list for the upcoming week. It is important that you enrol at least 48 hours prior to class so that you can get all the ingredients you need for the class. Recipes are usually flexible and ingredients can often be substituted. I do ask that you get in touch if you are wanting to substitute an ingredient so we can ensure it is suitable. Essential equipment will include: * saucepans * fry pan * child appropriate knife and chopping board * rolling pin * spatula, flipper, turner * stirring spoons * metric measuring cups and spoons * baking dishes * peeler, grater * oven and stove top Other optional equipment which may be used depending on the dishes chosen: * microwave * Blender, food processor, stick mixer * rice cooker, * garlic press, * pie dish * sushi rolling mat * pizza stone
I require every parent/learner to complete a cooking skills matrix prior to the first class, so learners need to enrol at least 48 hours prior to their first class. This dinner cooking class is only suitable for learners who have experience making snacks independently, have used the stove and oven before (can be with supervision), can use a knife to cut hard and soft foods. Depending on the age and independence level of the learner, parental supervision and participation might be more closely required.

This class does require that a parent is available at the start and throughout the class, when their chef needs support. I will NOT be allowing students to use knives, stove and oven unsupervised if they are not capable of doing it safely.

****** PLEASE NOTE - the Sunday section is a SPECIFIC MULTI-AGE FAMILY SECTION - aimed at being fully inclusive for multiple learners within one family. This means there are younger learners and learners who may require additional parental support to participate. So parents will be appearing on screen in this section to enable their learner to participate as required.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
We adapt and use recipes which are in the public domain.
