** THIS IS A FLEX CLASS AND DOES NOT HAVE LIVE MEETINGS ** Students will learn how to make a variety of delicious treats, candies, or goodies throughout this class. We will make a new recipe each week. Learners will build their recipe files, share ideas, and feel confident in what they have made. These treats are perfect for gatherings or celebrations with friends and family. Class Schedule: Week 1 - Homemade Caramels Week 2 - Toffee Week 3 - Symphony Fudge Week 4 - Cinnamon Roll...
Students will: • Learn to make a variety of treats and candies. • Learn to modify a recipe to fit their own needs and tastes. • Share experiences with one another through the classroom. • Build recipe files and increase confidence in cooking and baking.
I enjoy hosting parties and planning celebrations for my friends and family. Homemade treats and candies are always a big hit for parties, holidays or celebrations. These are fun to make and are always something that get people excited. I would like to share some of my favorite recipes with learners and help them grow their recipe files!
Our class has the best kind of homework! Make the candies and goodies and then enjoy them! :) A flex class is fun and convenient because learners can make the treats, as well as complete the assignments on their own time, but these classes are more fun when learners also interact with one another. Each week I want the learners to think about the recipe and the ingredients we are using. Why are these ingredients an essential part of that particular recipe? What ingredients could you add to change the recipe? I will ask questions about the treats and candies, recipes, or candy-making process at the end of each week. Students should be prepared to share successes, as well things that might have been a struggle as they learned something new. Students will also be expected to share a photo with the class of at least 3 of their treats. In the last couple weeks of the class, I would like everyone to share a favorite recipe with the class. This can be a recipe that you have created or one you have found from somewhere/someone else. This gives the students a chance to think about their recipes and find one they would like to share.
Supplies and ingredients will vary for each class. A supply/ingredient list with pictures (for those who like to have a visual picture of what we need) will be posted on Thursday/Friday of each week. The full recipe and instructional videos will be posted to the classroom page every Saturday, so learners can gather the necessary supplies and have them ready when they want to make the treats and candies. Some typical supplies used in most classes include: Candy thermometer - required in order to cook the caramel and toffee just right A rubber spatula Medium/large saucepan Measuring cups and spoons Wooden spoon Knife Medium-large mixing bowls Cookie/baking sheets Parchment paper Non-stick cooking spray
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
No live meetings, and maybe some time outside of class.
Parents - please be advised that we will be using the stove to make most of our candies and goodies, and cooking candy at high temperatures. We will also need to use the oven when we make the popcorn. We may also need to use a knife to cut butter or other ingredients, as well as the microwave to soften or melt ingredients. Please check ingredients for possible allergies and be aware that some of these recipes use nuts, gluten, chocolate and milk products. If you have an allergy concern, please message me regarding possible ingredients that may be a concern for your learner. Parental supervision is encouraged.
