1 hour per week. Students can expect to get some homework for many if not all of these sessions. Sometimes they'll be asked to fill out worksheets; in other instances they'll have to prepare for an oral vocabulary quiz or perhaps do some writing about a topic we've gone over in class.Class Experience
What follows is a tentative overview of the topics and materials that we'll cover in these sessions. I might change some of these depending on learner needs and interests. WEEK ONE I. Review of basic conversational vocabulary; Treffpunkt Berlin, Episode Fifteen II. Narrative past tense of verbs; telling stories based on visual material (single photos) WEEK TWO III. Treffpunkt Berlin, Episode Sixteen; review of preposition use IV. Use of Infinitives with and without "zu"; telling stories based on visual material (single photos) WEEK THREE V. Treffpunkt Berlin, Episode Seventeen; review of preposition use VI. Demonstrative pronouns; telling stories based on visual materials (series of pictures) WEEK FOUR VII. Treffpunkt Berlin, Episode Eighteen VIII. Reflexive verbs; telling stories based on visual materials (series of pictures) WEEK FIVE IX. Treffpunkt Berlin, Episode Nineteen X. Review of topics in the course Students will continue to learn about such areas as - talking about themselves and others - asking others about their background and interests - expressing preferences - discussing past and future events - asking questions about past and future events - understanding and using German syntax. I'll keep organizing this course in a "spiraling" fashion, the way I used to structure my middle school and high school German classes - meaning that I won't just cover something once, but often come back to it and delve into it more deeply. As the course continues, I'll use German as much as possible so that participants can feel more comfortable with the language. In this kind of class it's important that all learners are willing to speak with me and each another so that we can practice and absorb the materials and skills being presented. They'll need to participate actively during each lesson so that we can make substantial progress. I'll go on with episodes of the EMC Treffpunkt Berlin video series and augment those scripts with short stories in German on occasion.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I taught German in middle school and high school settings for thirty years before my retirement in 2016; and I lived, studied, and worked in Germany for three years. I've got a bachelor's degree in German, and earning my master's degree in Comparative Literature involved reading and analyzing scores of German novels and plays and writing my papers in German. More recently I have been involved in various German-English translation projects.
I've been teaching German online for more than three years now.
