Learning Goals
I'll structure this course in a "spiraling" fashion, the way I used to put together my middle school German classes - meaning that I won't just cover a subject once, but often come back to it and delve into it more deeply.
As the course continues, I'll use German as much as possible so that participants can feel more comfortable with the language.
In this kind of class it's important that all learners are willing to speak with me and with one another so that we can practice and absorb the materials and skills being presented. They'll need to participate actively during each lesson, interacting with me and with each other.
I'll include some early episodes of the EMC Treffpunkt Berlin video series to reinforce the material we're covering.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
When I retired in 2016 after more than thirty years in California classrooms, I figured that my days of teaching were pretty much behind me. As it turned out, though, that assumption was completely off the mark. I soon started teaching online courses in German and English to people in many corners of the globe - China, New Zealand, England, Canada, Germany - and enjoyed it a lot. In my spare time I also began helping to coach local elementary students in an afternoon chess group; because of the pandemic, I've now been meeting with them online since September 2020.
I believe in introducing new concepts and information in every lesson - that way each course develops momentum and energy. Also crucial is strategic repetition: material that we've already covered needs to be explored again now and then so that learners gain a deeper and stronger understanding of the material.
In my spare time I enjoy reading, gardening, playing the piano, and writing. In fact, I've already published two books—Your Ernst and Feeding Time: Tales of My Cat Companions.
