Lesson 1 will primarily serve to lay the groundwork for our roleplaying. We will discuss how to identify peer pressure and learn that is when a social peer tries to influence the learner to act in a way they feel uncomfortable with. We will talk about who the people are who apply social pressure and what that person hopes to accomplish. We will talk about the importance of standing strong, acting assertively and maintaining their commitment to their values. We will talk about tone of...
Students will have a stronger understanding of scenarios they will likely be faced with and how to respond effectively to the social pressure placed on them.
I was employed for 7 years as a School Prevention Counselor and this was often a subject within my scope of practice. I feel strongly about teaching assertive skills and arming young people with the language and know-how to socially protect themselves. I have a Master's Degree in Counseling and I have ben working professionally with young people for 15+ years.
Behavioral homework will be assigned, which will include practicing assertive behavior, reviewing strategies and developing a comfort level with as least one resistance skill.
I will provide handouts for this class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
The purpose of this class is to increase resistance skills and that includes areas that may make parents uncomfortable to speak about with their children. For the purpose of this class, we will use the phrase "sending pics" as a stand-in for sending pics of a more graphic nature. Parents can choose to close the gap of understanding regarding the nature of pictures their children will likely be pressured to send. Vaping and drug use will also be discussed during roleplaying scenarios.
