In this 4 week course, you will continue to advance in your basic ukulele knowledge and skills including learning more chords, more strumming patterns, and playing several more songs! Learners who enroll in this class are expected to have a basic knowledge of the ukulele and preferably have taken my first ukulele class: Begin Your Ukulele Journey. Learners should bring a tuned ukulele of good condition and an electronic tuner or tuner app to class, along with a patient attitude for their own learning process. Class will begin each week with with introductions, followed by instruction by Teacher Maren and guided student skill practice time. Class will finish each week with review and an assignment for next week's class if applicable. Each class builds upon knowledge learned in the previous lesson, so please plan to attend each session to get the best results. I'm excited to help you continue your journey of enjoying this wonderful instrument and making your own music! This 4 week class syllabus is as follows. Classes may have an assignment for students to practice between lessons. The student will need to bring a tuned ukulele in good working condition to class. The student should prepare their ukulele before class by tuning it. A video review of tuning basics will be provided before the start of the first class. Suggestions for supplies can be found in the materials section. Week 1: Review skills learned in basics class, learn 1 chord, 1 new strumming pattern. Week 2: Learn 1-2 more chords, 1 new strumming pattern, and review week 1. Week 3: Learn 1-2 more chords, review and learn new strumming patterns, learn 1 new song, review weeks 1 and 2. Week 4: Learn a third song, review previous 3 weeks, write a song together and play it if time allows! I look forward to helping you continue your ukulele journey so that you can bring music to your every-day life! Now that you've learned the basics, let's continue to build on the foundation and learn more skills. I'll see you in class!
Learning Goals
In addition to building confidence in their own learning process and learning to enjoy music in a community setting, the student will also learn four new chords and two strumming patterns. They will have the opportunity to learn 4 new songs with the chords they have learned. I encourage each student to be patient with themself and enjoy the learning process and continue to seek out learning opportunities beyond this class.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Younger ukulele learners with smaller hands and fingers may have less developed fine motor control and may need assistance and encouragement from parents or adults in learning to place their fingers on the correct strings and frets to play the chords properly. Muscle memory builds over time and can take practice, so encourage students to keep practicing every day.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello there! My name is Ms. Maren, and I live in the upper midwest, USA, with my family. I hold a B.A. degree in Sociology with a Spanish minor. I also hold both TESOL and TEFL teaching certificates. After gaining 2 years of public speaking and Spanish experience in the workplace, I turned my focus to home-based education. In addition to home-educating my 4 children for the past 11 years from preschool through 8th grade covering math, language arts, science, geography, history, social studies, Spanish, art and music, I've led public speaking, communication, and music classes to groups of home-educated children ages 5-14. Aside from in-person teaching, I've taught over 2,000 classes to students online covering language arts, phonics, grammar, English as a second language, and topic-based communication.
Students will find my classes to be relaxed but also quite interactive. I like to ask lots of questions and guide students to approach their world from a posture of inquiry, essentially engaging students in socratic, discovery-driven dialogue. I encourage students to think about good questions about topics and to articulate their perspectives. We also devote time to listening well to others as we engage in appreciating diverse perspectives. I love to bring content alive with games, drawing, and more. I feel comfortable engaging students of varying ages, abilities and temperaments and I take special care to allow equal time for each student to participate in a way that suits them.
I offer a growing variety of classes related to things I’m passionate about learning and teaching to others: ukulele, fine art appreciation, Animal Crossing science and art topics, poetry appreciation, beginner Spanish conversation, public speaking, dog-sitting 101 and more.
In addition to teaching online, I enjoy running a dog-sitting business with my four children, designing products for my Etsy shop, leading a community running club for kids, playing the ukulele and guitar, learning new instruments, and exploring our city with my family on bike, on skis, and on foot. I can’t wait to hear about your hobbies and dreams in the classroom. Ms. Maren
