Class Experience

Using retro gaming characters and titles as a launchpad for discussion and engagement, students will learn and work with a variety of writing styles. Students will learn about the art of persuasion and how to solidify their argument stances. Students will also learn how to write descriptively using imagery and how to construct intricate plots for their narrative stories. Creative and collaborative writing exercises will also be introduced to help students establish writing voice and purpose.
Students will participate in a variety of writing exercises throughout the 8-week course. Between class 7 and 8, students will select one style of writing in particular to develop into a more formal assignment submission. Verbal, constructive feedback and advice will be given for this formal assessment.
Pencil/pen and paper or a word processing program/app on a device for writing + a healthy interest or love for retro games! You don't have to know a lot about retro gaming - just a spark of an interest will do!
Student learning and progress will be constantly monitored and informally assessed throughout the course. There is no formal letter grade or written report card for the course as the content is largely meant for instruction and exploration, but students (or parents/guardians) may request written feedback or recommendations upon course completion or as needed.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Class content will be carefully selected to ensure that the games discussed adhere to the appropriate age levels of the learners in class.
