1 hour per week. I will be uploading enrichment activities learners can do independently each week to ensure I know the student is learning. If a learner is taking this class for a grade or credit, they will need to do the enrichments for assessment.Letter Grade
I will be uploading two online assessments for learners to complete as well as options for weekly enrichments to complete outside of class that I will grade and provide feedback on. These enrichment activities are optional. If you would like a formal grade or assessment at the conclusion of the course if the enrichments are completed, please let me know, and I will be happy to do that for you!Class Experience

Semester 1 transforms everyday math into an engaging, practical experience. No more hearing, “When will I ever use this?!” from your teen 🙂 From calculating discounts to balancing budgets, this course is your teen’s guide to understanding the math that will be used in their daily life. In this Consumer Math Semester 1 course, we dive into the everyday math that powers our daily decisions. This course isn't just about numbers; it's about making math relatable and useful. Whether your teen is calculating discounts or balancing a budget, I’ve got you covered! Course Format: This particular course meets twice per week for 6 weeks. However, I do also offer a 12 week week course as well as a flex option. Questions about the formats? Just ask, and I'll guide you through! Empowering Teens: 🌍 Real-World Applications: We tackle those "dreaded story problems" by turning them into realistic, everyday situations. Teens will learn to apply math in everyday situations, making the subject both fun and relevant. 🔢 Essential Skills: The course focuses on enhancing basic math skills like multiplying, converting percentages to decimals, and fractions, tailored for teen learners. 📚 Literacy and Critical Thinking: Beyond numbers, it’s about enhancing reading and analytical skills through practical math problems. Course Breakdown: *After each class, I also provide an enrichment activity to do, based on the lesson taught. I will provide feedback on those activities and can also provide a formal grade report at the conclusion of the course if requested by parents 🙂 Week 1: Finding interest, calculating sales discounts, and being a savvy shopper/Calculating credit card, car, and mortgage interest Week 2: Writing checks and deposit slips/Balancing a bank register (adding and subtracting) Week 3: Review, review, review!/Figuring out how to use fractions while cooking-doubling recipes, and more Week 4: Continue Fractions/Reading and understanding a Paycheck, taxes, and other deductions Week 5: Review, review, review and Balancing a Budget Week 6: Measurements: Figuring out square footage for laying carpet, hanging up and centering picture frames, etc.. /Figuring out how much to leave as a tip and when to tip, and how to spot and avoid fraud What Teens Will Gain: 💪 Confidence in handling real-life math scenarios. 🧠 Improved Literacy and Critical Thinking Skills through math. 🌟 A Sense of Independence and preparedness for adult financial responsibilities. Learners should come with their guided notes posted in the classroom, a writing utensil, and a calculator. Enrichment activities will be posted in the classroom after each class is finished.
