Class Experience

In this multi-day class, students will go on the consumer journey of life. Scenarios will be provided for each section so the student can practice real-life applications. Some weeks are math extensive. A scientific calculator is suggested.

Topics in the class include:
Income: Earned and unearned income  
Payroll tax: Medicare and social security tax, self-employment tax
Inflation: Causes and effects of inflation, consumer price index, solve for inflation
Banking: Savings and checking account, balance a checkbook, write a check
Compound interest: How do we earn compound interest, solve for compound interest
Investing in the stock market: What is a stock, conservative, moderate, and aggressive investing, solve for return on investment 
Credit cards: Calculate credit card interest and monthly payments, annual fees, earning cashback and reward points, compare cards 
Credit score: Credit score, credit report, factors that impact your score
Loans: Secured and unsecured loans, collateral, calculate simple interest 
Buying a car: Smart car shopping, purchasing vs. leasing, auto financing, down payment, calculate monthly payments,
Buying a home: Mortgage, closing costs, property tax, common types of home loans 
All things insurance: Health insurance, full coverage automobile insurance, liability insurance, factors that impact the price of automobile insurance, homeowners insurance, and mortgage insurance 
Life Insurance: Whole life insurance, term life insurance, factors that impact the price of life insurance
Retirement: Traditional and Roth 401K, pension, Traditional and Roth IRA, social security, tax advantages of saving for retirement, and matching programs
Income Tax: W-4, W-2, deductions, credits, tax liability, tax refund and filing status
