Constructing English Words - Prefixes, Roots and Suffixes
What's included
1 live meeting
55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Students will be introduced to building words in the English language using Greek and Latin roots. This is an important skill which improves reading and writing. Word study is an approach to spelling which identifies important patterns in spelling. The presence of a letter pattern often serves as a clue in to the multiple nuances of meaning. The class will involve an activity in which students use index cards to create word puzzles for their own use. Students will play a game through Quizizz, an interactive assessment tool and learning platform. Students need to have at least three index cards or equally cut paper or board. Students should have some exposure to multi-syllabic words, especially those beginning with prefixes (un-, de-, re-, etc.)* and ending with suffixes ending in (-ed, -ing, -ment, etc.). *The examples are only possible prefixes and suffixes, and may not necessarily be used in this lesson.
Learning Goals
Students will build words using prefixes, Greek/Latin roots, and suffixes.
Students will create a tool that they can use to practice word building.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a teacher who supports reading and writing in public the middle school setting, I have guided students through a word study with the goal of writing our own learner-sensitive definitions. While this particular class will not have ample time to go into the depth needed for students to do this kind of word study independently, this lesson can be a brief sample of what a future course of mine would look like once your child shows interest.
