Take for instance an oil spill or run off from coastal pollution such as home septic systems or contamination from surrounding factories. This class is taught in English.
I have been working as a private tutor for grades 5-12 in Science and English since 1999. I also worked as student mentor to post doctoral and summer student fellows for over ten years while I worked as a Research Chemist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. During my work there, I had the opportunity to become and author in a text book on high resolution mass spectometry and as well as being part of a documentary on the Discovery Channel. Previous to my work at Woods Hole, I worked as a chemical technician in a local environmental lab working on land and water pollution. During the summer, I also was blessed with the most incredible opportunity of working as a naturalist on a whale watch boat. Following my time working in research, I owned and operated a childcare for over 7 years where I taught preschool and tutored grade school children in the afternoon. I earned my B.S. in Cellular/Molecular Biology with a minor in Biochemistry from Bridgewater State University in 2000 and a M.S. in Education in 2015 from Walden University. Currently I am working on my M.S. in Biology with a specialization in Environmental Sciences from the University of Nebraska, Kearney. I have loved teaching and mentoring students of all ages and am thankful to add online teaching to my experiences in education. I am a huge advocate of online learning since it has not only benefited me, but my children as well.
Each week the students will be provided with a recording to listen to as well as weekly readings on the classroom board. Each student will also be provided with their individual login to ck-12, which is a site I will be using to provide additional assignments for the students. This class is designed for students to work at their own pace. No due dates will be placed on assignments and the weekly recordings will be available on the classroom board and be utilized at the times the student wishes. There will also be an optional project as well.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
The CK-12 login is created by the teacher, no personal information by the students will be shared.
Scholarly articles from websites such as NOAA, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Buzzards Bay Coalition, science direct, jstor.org, and wiley.com will be used as sources for the class material.
