During this class, we will go over what anxiety is, and simple ways to overcome it. We will talk about "worry monsters" so the learners can imagine their anxiety as something to overcome. I will explain that worry monsters are not real, but are just another word for anxiety. During the first class, we will play a get-to-know you game then I will show a movie from Sesame Street explaining what anxiety is, I will explain what is happening in the brain when we feel anxiety, and we will practice tips to overcome anxiety. In the second class, we will review what we learned in the first class, then we will talk about where we feel anxiety in our bodies. Students will color a handout and explain where they feel anxiety in their bodies, then we will practice another way to overcome anxiety. In the third class, we will quickly review the past two classes, then I will tell a story about a girl who met her "worry monster" when she felt anxiety at school. During the story, her worry monster gets smaller and smaller because of her "super powers" to overcome anxiety. We will then draw pictures of our worry monsters and practice "defeating" them together. In the final class, we will review what we learned in the previous classes, then we will learn about mindfulness. We will practice talking differently to our worry monsters and each of the tools that we learned, along with some new mindfulness tools to conquer our worry monsters. We will end by drawing ourselves defeating our worry monsters. After each class, I will give a handout with the tips we learn. At the end of the 4 sessions, I will also give a more in depth handout with more ways to feel better with anxiety.
