Spelling makes the most sense when it is taught in a direct manner, eliminating the need for guessing. In this class, we will cover 8 common sounds in our English language and learners will be given explicit directions on how to spell these sounds. Class is taught in an upbeat, encouraging, and multi-sensory environment. Students will learn to spell words correctly by relying on their ability to determine the spelling of these common sounds, such as: • ind • age • ous vs. us • au vs. aw Each class will start with spelling warm-ups to strengthen the skills needed to become a confident speller. A new sound will be introduced in each class. Each class will also include review of the spelling of sounds learned previously. Short custom-made, engaging videos will be used to present the spelling of each sound, followed by practice applying this to spelling words, including verbal and written methods, dictation of words, phrases & sentences, oral spelling, and oral decoding. Visual and varying formats in the class will keep learners engaged while providing lots of practice time. This helps the new spelling knowledge stick and become part of the learner’s spelling repertoire! A short homework assignment will be posted after each class to reinforce what was learned. Once the one-page homework is submitted, the teacher will respond within 24 hours with corrections, detailed feedback, encouragement, and added spelling tips when applicable.
