1 hour per week. I estimate the work for this class to take roughly an hour each week between written homework, learner-to-learner activities, brief readings, and the Kahoot quiz.

Class Experience

Come conjugate Spanish verbs in the context of fun sentences and silly stories in this flexible schedule (no live meetings) course! This class is designed for learners who have at least a little background in Spanish, which can motivate them to improve verb conjugation skills with the aim of growing in conversation ability. Please note that this is not a Spanish immersion course, and English explanations will be used to aid in understanding of the material.

Week 1 - Personal subject pronouns and verb conjugation background
Week 2 - Present tense regular -ar verbs
Week 3 - Present tense regular -er verbs
Week 4 - Present tense regular -ir verbs and review

For week 1, while learners at this level tend to be familiar with the most common personal subject pronouns (yo, tú, él, ella, usted, nosotros, nosotras, ellos, ellas, ustedes), we will review and talk about how to choose the correct pronoun given the context (plus mention vosotros and vosotras, though we will not focus on these pronouns that are not used in Latin America for this course). For weeks 2-4, we will use the pronouns we have learned plus other subjects as we determine how to conjugate the verb type of the week, choosing the right conjugations for each context.

Each week has three main components:
1. Pre-recorded lesson
2. Written homework worksheet
3. Learner-to-learner activities*
4. A brief passage to read in Spanish (which uses the verb types we are working on)**
5. Kahoot quiz

*Our learner-to-learner activities for this class include:
1. Conjugation tag:
I "tag" someone by telling them a verb in the infinitive form and a pronoun to conjugate it with. They are "it" until they conjugate the verb correctly AND they give someone else a verb and a pronoun to conjugate with it, and so on.
2. Silly sentence challenge:
Picking one or more verbs from the week, each learner writes a silly sentence. Strive for grammatically correct, but it does not have to make logical sense! Then you will decide one classmate's silly sentence to nominate to win the "frases chistosas" challenge.
3. Sentence string game:
I start a sentence and add on "y" (and) then a new subject. The next person continues the sentence with a verb conjugated for that pronoun I gave and adds "y" with another pronoun for the next person to use, and so forth until we have created a long sentence together.

**I provide them a recording of my reading of the passage and ask learners to record their readings in an audio or video file and submit for feedback. I provide personalized video or audio feedback on weekly video or audio homework submissions.

Most of the stories and sentences from the lessons and worksheets are written by me, the instructor. Sometimes I may incorporate the work of others, but only when it is in the public domain or I have expressly received permission from the creator.
