This ongoing spelling class is based on the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading and spelling. Each week’s lesson will help learners recognize sounds in the English language, decode words, and spell words correctly by relying on spelling rules and generalizations, rather than on memory. A supportive, positive, and engaging environment will be maintained throughout our class time. Learning spelling rules and patterns helps to make sense of spelling, gives you more control over spelling...
Students will increase their spelling confidence and skills.
Allison Woolley has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California at Davis. She has homeschooled her children for 13 years and has seen the benefit of teaching this explicit manner of spelling to her own children, specifically the help it gives to struggling spellers and readers. Her experience also includes tutoring English Language Arts to 2nd – 6th graders and teaching faith formation classes to children in pre-K through 8th grade.
Two homework assignments will be given after each class. One will be an audio file with dictated sentences. The other assignment is to write a short story (one paragraph) using words that follow this week’s spelling pattern. Plan to spend 10-15 minutes on each of these. A Word List will also be provided each week with suggested multi-sensory activities to enable the learner to interact with and master the words covered in class.
Please have a small whiteboard, dry erase marker & eraser OR a notebook & pencil when you log into class. A notebook is also needed as a spelling journal to work on at home.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
