Class Experience

This 12-week course is perfect for students that need a refresher on the skills tested on the SAT, in addition to practicing with actual College Board questions. Each week, we will review 2 new topics and/or strategies, alternating between the 3 sections (English, Reading, and Math). I will teach the skills of the day and any strategies involved, students will have independent time to practice, and then we'll discuss the problems as a small group. All questions will be taken from old SATs so they will be very similar to what the students will see on test day. A mini practice test will be given before the first day of class, and also at the end of the 12 weeks, to track progress. There will also be weekly checkpoints to check for understanding along the way. No homework is required, but I will provide optional assignments and resources if requested. It is highly recommended that students have had exposure to Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry before taking this class.

Below is a weekly breakdown of what we will cover (numerous practice problems for each topic/strategy):
Week 1: Math (top strategies) and Reading
Week 2: English (concision and parallel structure) and Math (linear functions)
Week 3: Math (systems of equations) and Reading
Week 4: English (punctuation) and Math (exponential functions)
Week 5: Math (absolute value and inequalities) and Reading
Week 6: English (comma rules) and Math (quadratics)
Week 7: Math (percents, decimals, fractions) and Reading
Week 8: English (subject-verb and subject-pronoun agreement) and Math (imaginary numbers and literal equations)
Week 9: Math (probability and statistics) and Reading
Week 10: English (transition words and sentence location) and Math (geometry)
Week 11: Math (triangles and trig) and Reading
Week 12: English (prepositional idioms, confused homophones, clauses, tone, etc) and Math (reading graphs/tables/charts)

*BONUS* After the 12 weeks, the students will take a mini practice test. A free, individual session can then be scheduled where we will review their mistakes!

My goal is to make test prep accessible and enjoyable for everyone. There will be lots of opportunities for participation and growth!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, my name is Linda Rizzi and I offer a variety of Math and ACT/SAT prep classes on Outschool. I am a kind, outgoing, fun teacher that has a passion for helping students. Whether it's helping a student overcome past challenges or providing enrichment, I love working with them all!

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Math Education (University of Illinois) as well as Master's Degrees in Math Education (DePaul University) and School Counseling (Northeastern University). In addition, I am a certified teacher with 14 years of experience at the high school level. I also have a tutoring company in Chicago, The Teaching Tutor (www.theteachingtutor.com). Courses I have taught/tutored include the following: middle school Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and test prep: NWEA MAP, high school enrollment exams, ACT, and SAT.

I have spent the last few years working with a test prep company on ACT/SAT prep. I have taught numerous group classes, as well as individual tutoring in all sections of both exams. My goal with these classes is to provide content, official practice problems, and strategies to boost confidence and scores. I am excited to now offer these classes on Outschool.

My teaching philosophy is to always meet the student where they are at, both emotionally and academically. I sometimes call myself a Math Therapist because I often help students overcome their Math anxiety. I truly believe that ANYONE can be successful at Math if they have the right resources. My goal is to work with students holistically and find out what motivates them. I like to tailor the lessons to their interests whenever possible and make them fun through songs, stories, and memory tips. I like to open up my lessons to discovery instead of lecture because it ignites curiosity and understanding.

When I'm not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family. I enjoy cooking new recipes with my husband and trying new restaurants. I love being active outdoors through biking, walking, and hiking. I also love traveling around the world. Every summer, we try to take an international trip and some of the places I've been include: Italy, France, Croatia, South Africa, Iceland, and Norway.
