US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
This class assumes zero alphabetic knowledge and will guide the student to the point where the student is a confident reader. Letter sounds are introduced at an easy pace, no more than two per instructional session which allows the student to develop automaticity in letter/sound correspondence. Sounds are introduced in a sequence that accounts for their ease of articulation and blending. Phonological Awareness tasks are introduced using multi-sensory methods. The multi-sensory prompts are removed as the student develops automaticity at each level. Phoneme articulation is taught explicitly. Orthographical rules are introduced in visually salient ways using a special alphabet. All initial texts are decodable and follow the scope and sequence of the program. When advanced phonics are introduced, decodable texts may be substituted for literature at an appropriate level. Irregular words are introduced in word analysis drills that account for how the word "should" be pronounced (according to regular rules) and then how it "is" pronounced, and the orthographic maps are created to highlight the discrepancies. Syllabication rules are taught hierarchically and depend on the student's progress in the phonological awareness battery. Error handling follows a sequence of specific praise, and as appropriate, Socratic or explicit responses.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to read and spell with great accuracy and facility.
Other Details
Learning Needs
This course is appropriate for all students, but will accommodate students who are at risk for dyslexia most. Students with ADHD will enjoy the various tasks (games) and the clear instructions which introduce them.
Supply List
I recommend a supply of Q-tips, as the student will use them to touch the computer monitor for certain tasks. I also recommend a set of colored fuzz balls or colored blocks, something manipulable, for certain tasks. Neither of these are required. I recommend avoiding teaching the names of letters in preparation for this class. If they learn the names of letters incidentally, it is fine, but I would not actively encourage the learning of letter names.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have homeschooled my two children to read way beyond their grade levels. My younger child wanted to learn to read when he was three and a half. By the time he was five he was reading Beatrix Potter, and has at six, read every Calvin and Hobbes comic several times.
Aside from successes teaching my own children to read, I have worked for several years primarily as a literacy and dyslexia remediation tutor. I am proud to say that my work has changed the lives of many students and I am confident that this course will teach your kid to read.
For kids that are susceptible to the onset of dyslexia, this program will help them avoid that heart-breaking condition.
Also, kids tend to really like me, even kids that hate school.
