What's included

60 live meetings
45 in-class hours
Homework
1 hour per week. Students should study their roots using their notebooks. I recommend that students spend 30 minutes per week studying their root words. There will also be a weekly test. Optional reinforcing activities are also available.
Assessment
Each week students have a test. The tests are NOT multiple choice. Students will define the root or provide words that include the root. Some questions provide students with words that they have to define based on the root.

Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Intermediate Level
DESCRIPTION
This is a class designed for middle-level students who are serious about improving their vocabulary. Rather than memorizing word lists, my course focuses on learning and applying roots so that students can become better readers and critical thinkers. Students will be surprised at how many unfamiliar words they can figure out just by learning the meanings of roots! This class is perfect for students that plan to take advanced courses (particularly in STEM), want to prepare for standardized testing, want to improve vocabulary, or just are logophiles! I do recommend that students are reading or working at least at a 5th-grade level before enrolling in the course. Students will create their own artistic "dictionaries" to remember the roots and related words. I have created this course to be both enjoyable and rigorous. Additionally, I have used this method with my own students in my brick-and-mortar classrooms with great success.

REQUIRED MATERIALS
Students should have a notebook or journal of at least 80 pages (spiral or composition) for this course as well as a writing utensil. Coloring supplies are optional!

STRUCTURE
Class 1: During each class, we will go over a warmup. This is typically a random vocabulary in-context question. Then students will learn 10 roots per week (with about 30 words). The only exception is the first class in which we will cover 5 roots (to give students time to set up their notebooks). In their notebooks, they will divide their page in half by drawing a line in the middle. Students will write the root and definition, 3 common words that go along with the root (I will first ask students if they can think of any, then I will give them some additional options), as well as sketch an image that helps them remember the root. We will repeat for each root! (Students that want to draw a more detailed image may want to wait to draw until after class)

Class 2: This class also has a warmup. If we ran out of time to finish our roots/words from the previous class, we will do so here. The second class is a review and quiz class. We will review, play a game (blooket/gimkit), and students will take a quiz as homework. These tests will vary in length and the types of questions. The first test will contain 5 roots, but we will work up to having 50 roots on the test (for example Week 1=5 roots, Week 2= 15, week 3= 25, week 4= 35, etc..). The tests are NOT multiple choice. Students will define the root or provide words that include the root. Some questions provide students with words that they have to define based on the root. Quizzes will be graded by the instructor after class.

* For the very first class, students only learn 5 roots. This is because I'll be introducing the basics, the class structure, and students will be setting up their notebooks.*

HONESTY POLICY: Academic honesty is defined as completing all academic work without cheating, lying, stealing, or receiving assistance from any other person or using any source of information not appropriately authorized or attributed. All students are required to follow the academic honesty policy. If I suspect that a student is using any materials on the tests (notebooks, AI, internet, etc.), parents will be notified.

LEARNING PROCESS
Students take notes during the class by writing the root, the root's definition, related words (3-4), and drawing a sketch that is connected with the root. This strategy is effective because pictures bring root words “to life” and provide a visual that can help students remember the root word. They can “picture” a word in their minds that can help with word recall and overall comprehension. After class, students will have Quizlet links and games to help them with comprehension/memory. The tests also help students identify which words they are struggling with. Also, because students see the same roots on each test with 10 new roots each week, this helps them commit the words to memory rather than just learning for a test. The tests also check to make sure that students can apply what they learn (not just rote definitions).

MISSED CLASSES
If your student misses a class, a recording will always be accessible on the classroom page. The PowerPoint notes are always available as well. The weekly test will also be emailed privately to the student.

GRADES
Tests are graded. I provide grades for every test and keep track of student grades. If parents want to use this class for credit, I can send grades. I am a certified English educator, but some states have different requirements, so parents should make sure that the class fulfills all of the requirements.

PAY/COST
Save $100 by paying upfront for the entire 30 weeks! Message me for the promo code!

REFUND POLICY
1. If the parent chooses to pay weekly: "Cancel anytime. No refunds for past payments. Most recent payment can be refunded within 24 hours of purchase and prior to the first meeting of the payment period."

2. If the parent chooses to pay upfront: "Full refund until the class begins, or within 24 hours of purchase (until class starts), then a pro-rated refund based on the number of meetings."

Note. If your student is not able to attend in person, refunds will not be issued. This is because the student can still access the materials, recording, and receive grades for assignments.

Learning Goals
By learning root words each week, learners have the potential to increase their vocabulary by over 1,000 words. Each root is taught alongside 3-4 words that include that root. Many of these root words are also rooted in the romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian), used in medicine/science, history, and even math! The goal of this class is to learn new words and to be able to apply that knowledge to other disciplines.
