Students will listen to a story and understand how to retell the book using their 5 fingers as clues to each story element. We will create 5 finger retell crafts to keep at home. These can be used to hang on the wall to help students remember the essential components of a retell. At the end we will all share what we have made and decide what book we will read to try with it at home. Here is the schedule of books: May 17-23 - Pigeon books (by Mo Williams) May 24-30 - Piggie and Elephant books May 31-June 6 - Elbow Grease ( a story about monster trucks)
Learning Goals
Student will improve their understanding of story comprehension by understanding the 5 finger retell (setting, characters, problem, solution , ending). They will be able to apply this method of retell to any book that they read at home or school in the future.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Kristin and I am a Reading Specialist. I have been teaching in the public schools as a reading specialist for the past 15 years. I am trained in Reading Recovery and have a Masters degree in Reading Education.
My passion in life is helping kids become more confident in themselves! I want kids to have a desire to read and write rather then thinking of it as something they have to do. I like to use engaging but also research based strategies in my instruction.
I am excited to help your child learn to love to read and write!
Regarding horses: I have been riding horses for 35 years. I currently compete at the national level in three day Eventing and am ranked #8 in the Midwest . My horse “Jameson “ is a 9 year old Irish Sport Horse who loves to jump and also loves kids! Jameson and I are excited to teach summer camp via Outschool! He has taught many children how to ride and he loves the extra attention (even by video)!
