This course will cover fundamentals of music theory to ultimately allow the students to be able to compose short works by the end of the 9 weeks. Beyond getting started with composing, the topics covered are basic theory principals that will help grow the student as a complete and thinking musician, and augment their musical performance. Week 1 - Treble clef, bass clef, music notation Week 2 - Rhythm, time signature Week 3 - Key signature (Major) Week 4 - Key signature (Minor) Week 5 - Triads and inversions Week 6 - Chord Progression Week 7 - Composition Week 8 - Composition Week 9 - Final Concert! This course is a balanced mix of lecture and hands on type class. After concepts are introduced and explained, students will have the chance to directly apply the concept through exercises and analysis. Musical examples, demonstrations, sight singing, melodic dictation, as well as other tactical devices will be used to help students process the concepts on different levels. A positive mindset is in the forefront of my teaching, and in my own personal practice and performance. With experience teaching AP Music Theory with high rates of success on exams, as well as experience teaching theory privately, I aim to show that theory is not something to be considered boring, but is an exciting and foundational facet of music and show the students how this knowledge gives them power of creativity in their own performance and musical lives. I celebrate every success, no matter how big or small, and help the individual student achieve success on their own personal journey. Students will have access to work with me through messages in between classes, and I encourage them to contact me with questions, or to show me what they are working on! A musical background is preferred but not required. The goal of this course is that even a student with no musical background can get to a level of reading music, understanding musical concepts, and even getting started with writing their own music.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to read music in treble and bass clefs, know basic time signatures and rhythms, learn how key signatures work in major and minor keys and how to construct them, what triads are and how they are important to harmony, learn how chord progressions work to form a melodic phrase, and ultimately, put all the knowledge together to compose their own works.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Thank you for your interest in my classes!
I am a professional trombonist with a passion for teaching music. Described by Gramophone Magazine as "eloquent," my professional career took me all over the world. I played in a professional orchestra in South Korea, and played in several ensembles and orchestras in the Netherlands. I was also a member of a touring brass ensemble, which gave me the opportunity to play for people all across the United States and abroad. I received my Bachelor of Music degree in Trombone Performance and Music History from New England Conservatory. I was then fortunate enough to study abroad and received my Master of Music from Rotterdam Conservatory in the Netherlands, and finally received my Doctor of Musical Arts degree from University of Maryland.
As a teacher, I was an adjunct professor of trombone in South Korea, and presented numerous masterclasses all over the world. I have taught privately to all ages for 10 years, and also have experience in a classroom setting as band director, teaching everything from beginning band to honors jazz and AP Music Theory.
My goal as a teacher is not only to guide the learner to personal success, but to have that success be driven by their passion for music. A positive mindset is at the forefront of my teaching, and I believe in the uniqueness of the individual and tailor my teaching to each learner. I spend time making sure each learner understands the fundamentals, and technically advances at their own pace, but it is heavily emphasized that the reason we spend time perfecting our music is to ultimately communicate with the listener, and to use music as a form of artistic expression at any level!
Besides music, animals are my passion! When I am not busy with practicing, performing, or teaching, I am spending time with our two dogs, two horses, and nine chickens! I love teaching tricks to our dogs, and training our horses for competition!
