Class Experience

Grade level standards in writing, reading, comprehension, grammar, speech and debate, and critical thinking are covered.
I am a middle-grade special education English teacher with a Master's in English Education and have taught grades 3-12. I am passionate about educating others about disability studies and have taught all of these texts in my classroom. For my master's degree, I wrote my dissertation on the importance of positive representation of exceptionalities in literature for youth.
All reading is done outside of class. 30-45 pages per class.
Printouts (posted on the classroom) and novels.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Students will be given a grade and progress report at the end of the semester.

Out of My Mind deals with a character with cerebral palsy and some sad themes (no deaths) and Percy Jackson is a fantasy novel that has some mild violence and mild crude humor (words such as "idiot" and "stupid" are used sparingly). All of these books are rated for ages 9-12. Topics will be kept at an age-appropriate level.
