US Grade 2 - 4
In this fun, 4 week course, students will learn the structure, elements, and skills necessary to write a complete narrative from start to finish with step-by-step instruction and practice in planning, executing, and revising narrative writing with confidence. This class is for young writers ready to learn about narrative writing story structure, who have basic writing skills, and the ability to organize thoughts in complete sentences with a beginning, middle, and end. This class is an excellent follow up for students who have completed my ‘How to Write a Paragraph’ 3 week course. This is a fun, interactive writing course that allows students to engage in discussions, participate in hands-on activities and writing experiences, and collaborate with peers while we learn each step of narrative writing together. Students will have plenty of time for independent writing, and regular conferencing with the teacher to support their learning and process. I teach this course using a Writing Workshop style format where I utilize mini-lessons to introduce new topics, model effective writing strategies, lead students in topical discussions and activities, brainstorm ideas, and provide time for independent writing with support. Students are each encouraged to share both their ideas and their writing with the class. I use an engaging slide show I created specifically for this course by sharing my screen with students, and enthusiastically guide them through each of the parts of the lesson. In each meeting, students can be expected to learn or review a new narrative writing skill, participate in group discussions and activities, and have time to practice new skills through independent writing or skill work. I will provide worksheets each week that I also designed just for this course to enrich students’ understanding of the skills being taught. It is highly recommended that students print out the worksheets relevant to each of the classes to get the most out of the learning experiences. ** I work with each student to help them achieve growth and mastery while instilling confidence and passion through support and encouragement. In this course, we will define what a narrative is, study the structure of a narrative, and learn to write both personal narratives and fictional short story narratives. We will cover: Purpose of a Narrative Story Elements: Characters, Setting, & Plot Planning and Organizing a Narrative Narrative Hooks Narrative Closings Exploding Small Moments How to Generate Narrative Story Ideas The Writing Process Describing Characters Personal Narrative Fictional Narrative Using an Editing Rubric to Self-Evaluate Students will finish this course with a strong narrative they are proud of, and a clear understanding of how to write a narrative from start to finish. I will communicate with you regarding your student’s progress throughout the course. Feel free to message me with any questions. I look forward to writing with your student!
