Learners will improve writing, reading, speaking and listening skills.
I have been teaching English/language arts since 1997, and I have experience with elementary, middle school, high school, and college level classes. I have worked with remedial and gifted learners. I homeschool my own children. And I want to help make your job easier. Let me bring my years of experience to your learner. Let's just see what they are capable of!
Homework Offered
Each week, learners will be asked to read assigned chapters in an assigned book and to do a writing exercise or activity. As we progress from grammar to paragraphs to essays, the assignments will get a bit longer. Please let me know if your child finds the written homework too easy or too difficult, so I can offer modifications to appropriately challenge your individual learner.

Three books are required for this class. They should be easy to find at your local library or for purchase online or from a local bookseller. Or for online free rentals, try openlibrary.org.

Kite Fighters by Linda Sue Park
Sylvia and Aki by Winifred Conklin
Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
1. The book Sylvia and Aki deals with discrimination. Some of the minor characters are unkind and prejudiced toward the main characters. (Specifically, Sylvia is not allowed to attend her neighborhood school because she is not white, and Aki is sent to a Japanese internment camp.) We will discuss in class how although those events really happened, they were wrong. This book is based on a true story and deals with actual events and attitudes in the past. I believe it is important for children to understand how people have been treated in the past in order to understand our current, divided world and to do their best to be a part of the solution rather than the problem. The story itself is about friendship and resilience and persevering in spite of living through a difficult period of history. It is also important to know that the court case in this book set a precedent for the well-known Brown v. Board of Education case later. I think that the negative attitudes in the book are clearly depicted as wrong, and the main characters, Sylvia and Aki, are obviously the victims. In spite of being misjudged, they persevere and end up thriving. I want to help learners see how, regardless of our background, we should strive to overcome stereotypes. I will let the learners know what to expect, so they are prepared for it. And I will, of course, deal with these issues with sensitivity and understanding. I have experience teaching this book as well as other books that address these types of social issues, and I have taken training on how to deal with "hard issues" such as this as a teacher. If you have any specific concerns, please reach out.

2. Google docs, a third party resource, is used in this class. Learners will not need to create an account. I will send them a link to their own personal google doc just for this class, and they will write on that.
