Are you ready to make a difference in your community? In this class, you will learn how to be a productive volunteer in your neighborhood. There are organizations in need all around! Homeless shelters. Animal humane societies. Nursing homes with elders. These are just a few examples of places that need YOU! Yes, YOU! Topics to be covered in the class include but are not limited to the following: the value of community service and service-learning, the statistics of volunteerism in the United States, proper etiquette for seeking volunteer opportunities in your city, and how to build long-term relationships with service organizations. In this four-week course, students will be assigned to volunteer four hours at a local nonprofit organization and present their experiences. The true transformation will take place in the heart and mind.

Week 1 Topic & Activity: Why community service is valuable? Students will learn about the foundations of community service and why society depends on the giving hearts of the community. Students will examine the satisfaction and internal fulfillment of giving to others that many long-term volunteers experience as a profound effect of community service. Students will watch first-hand accounts of volunteers and their explanations of kindness.

Week 2 Topic: & Activity Where should I volunteer? Students will examine various non-profit organizations and volunteer opportunities. Students will also take a personality test to select a volunteer organization that perfectly matches his/her personality and life goals.

Week 3 Topic & Activity: What is appropriate etiquette for volunteering? Students will be given tips on how to make a great first impression as a volunteer. Students will practice communication skills and review various tasks that may come up as part of volunteer duties, like sweeping or collecting trash.
