Class Experience

In this class students will thoughtfully discuss, evaluate and form a better understanding of these three systems. Much of my teaching style is based on asking questions and engaging with students with the goal of forcing deeper thinking. As we walk through these systems we will look at how they differ, what each means, and why all are important to better understand our world today. There will be an interactive presentation, some questions/practical scenarios to think through, discussion and a focus seeing how each of these systems work in real life.

To begin class I try to sense what the students already know by asking several questions. This becomes the springboard that launches us into the course topic. We will look at different issues in the course since each relates directly including individual liberty, gun rights, taxes, welfare, religion, private property, privacy etc. By looking into the origins, practices and beliefs of Communism, Fascism and Capitalism we will see how each is unique and has greatly impacted individual nations and international history. A much better understanding of history and economics will be the result of taking this course!

No prior knowledge or experience is needed but curiosity and a desire to learn, think and voice your thoughtful ideas. I've found many students really begin to have "light bulb" moments from this engaging lesson.

This topic requires brief discussion of death counts especially since Hitler is the most "famous" fascist and he killed so many. However, while deaths will be discussed at times there will not be an effort to show graphic pictures, sensationalize, or go into gory details.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I earned a Master’s Degree in History, have lived and taught abroad, and currently teach at an international high school. In my career I’ve seen many students struggle to understand, or simply misunderstand, these systems and what each means. As a result much international history and some current events cannot be fully understood. This class is not focused on “talking politics” but studying neutral facts and developing critical thinking skills.
