This class requires no prior knowledge of American Sign Language. We will be focusing on basic signs and hand shapes that make up the foundation of the language. We will be learning the alphabet, numbers 1-10, and other simple communication signs. We will briefly discuss why people use ASL, who uses it, and how we, as persons that hear, can use it. My style of teaching is very interactive. I use play and song, not only to make learning fun, but also because it's a great memory technique. I use the last five minutes of my class as an open question round, this allows the students to be curious, which in turn allows the growth of knowledge. I encourage students to help one another out. This is a great way to help every student learn a sense of community within the class room that can translate into real world teamwork.
Learning Goals
My goal in these lessons is to peak children's interest in learning about a new language.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, my name is Natalie and I love to teach!
I love helping young ones find their voices and discover ways to express themselves effectively. American Sign Language can be a life changing tool for children to help them communicate. My goal in these lessons is to help children be able to expressing themselves in a different way. I use play and song, not only to make learning fun, but to also help my students to remember the information. I was 8 years old when I discovered ASL. Since then I have dedicated many years to learning, improving, and traveling to other parts of the world to teach.
I have four years of experience working with children ages 2-6, as well as two years working with a speech therapy program for 2-4-year-olds. Additionally, I have six years of experience teaching deaf adults and children in ASL. There is nothing better than watching a student light up when learning about a new subject and watching their interest grow.
In addition to ASL, I have other hobbies I am incredibly passionate about! I'm as much at home in a pink Victorian-era dress making tea as I am trekking through the wilderness with nothing but the essentials strapped to my back! Unfortunately, I have had to cancel all of my ASL classes due to injuries to my wrists. I hope to be able to relist my ASL classes soon.
My goal is to be able to share all of my passion and knowledge through OutSchool.
