Class Experience

Week 1: Understanding Nonverbal Messages - Learners will identify, analyze, and practice nonverbal cues
Week 2: Listening - Learners will recognize good listening skills and practice active listening techniques
Week 3: Speaking – Learners will recognize the power of their words; learners will evaluate and demonstrate the relationship between their word selection and consequences
Week 4: Being Assertive – Learners will develop definitions and examples of passive, aggressive, and assertive behaviors and use assertive behavior to communicate more effectively
Week 5: Expressing Opinions Constructively – Learners will recognize productive communication even when disagreeing. Learners will practice expressing and listening to opinions
No actual homework will be provided; however, extension activities will be provided weekly.
Examples of Extension Activities:
1- Learners will write in their journal
2- Learners will use the media to identify various types of communication
Learners will need access to a microphone (built-in computer mic is fine) and a camera to allow for interaction and practicing during class. There will be weekly practice opportunities for the teen to use at home – a natural extension of what was learned in class that day.
Feedback will be provided throughout the course as needed.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
