Master the art of comic book storytelling with learning how to match up words and pictures together by using a storyboard! Learn how to use this tool that allows professional artists to outline an episode. Whether you use pen and ink or a comics computer program like Procreate, you will enjoy taking the next step in becoming a comic book artist.

Each session will include one new tip to try, along with time to draft and draw your story.

This is a nurturing, supportive class that will help your learner improve their current level of drawing comics & writing. The instructor listens to your learner and helps her work out how to take what she sees in their head and find a way to draw it on the page. Please refer to the class syllabus below for a detailed breakdown of each lesson. Appropriate for students 11 to 15. Late enrollment is allowed in this class. If interested send a message by using the Ask a Question button or by enrolling in the course.

Once your learner masters the skills in this class she'll never go back to seeing comics or movies in the same way again!

Parental Guidance
--I will be screen sharing past student's work (used with permission) for class to demonstrate examples. --I often gather drawings from class to use in other teaching contexts--future classes on Outschool, etc. Please let me know if you would NOT like your learner's work to be used--or if I must ask your learner first. Otherwise, I'll assume that I have permission. (I do often ask students anyway. I think certain students really enjoy knowing their work was strong enough to use as an example.) --the pdfs of templates for storyboarding were made by me. Feel free to share as you like.

I actually learned how to teach comics by gathering advice from the iconic Scott McCloud just as his seminal book Understanding Comics was released for the first time decades ago. Since then I've taught over 30 comics classes in summer camps. I've also been invited into public schools where they've been awarded state grants so I can teach comics to their students. I come from a writing background, but comic books are a unique medium comprised of half writing and half visual story telling. Teachers used to walk by the classes were I taught and were amazed -- they'd never seen an entire group of ten year old boys so quiet and focussed for such a long time.
