Class experience
US Grade 6 - 9
Beginner - Advanced Level
The class is structured to expose students to new aspects of comics to which they haven't been introduced before. At the same time, the course practices will build confidence in a warm and friendly supportive setting. Each week we'll cover the basic vocabulary of comics, learning at least one term a week and one new skill a week. We'll draw together and share our drawings if we want to. Students will note improvements, and mention the details that catch their eye in others drawings. ...
In this course students will improve the following skills: -focus & concentration -analysis skills -oral communication skills -writing abilities -storytelling abilities -peer communication -and of course knowledge of comics and drawing techniques.
I actually got to learn how to teach comics from an iconic figure in the comics world named Scott McCloud just as his seminal book Understanding Comics had been released for the first time. Since then I've taught over 15 comics classes in summer camps. I've also been invited into public schools and been awarded grants to teach comics to kids. I come from a writing background, but comic books are a unique medium comprised of half writing and half visual story telling. Teachers used to walk by the classes that I taught and snicker -- they'd never seen a group of boys so completely focussed and quiet before.
Homework Offered
Students will be encouraged to complete the assignments that we start in class each week. These assignments might take up to an hour to finish. But it's also perfectly acceptable to show work that isn't finished yet.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students will remark upon what they like and remember about other students comics. I've found that people really pay attention to what their peers have to say. They can tell when their peers are being sincere in their admiration. Moreover, the students tend to model after the instructor and the better students in class.Grades Offered
