Key details are words and phrases that give important information in a text. Authors use key details to support their main idea. Readers can struggle with distinguishing key details that support a main idea. In this course, I will explicitly show readers how to identify key details in a text. I will help students understand that key points are important in understanding the text as a whole. Learners will be explicitly taught how to use scan a text to find key details. Reading clues are the key details of the reading that support the main of a reading passage. In this class, I will also clarify the differences between a key detail and a main idea. Week #1: Students will learn to annotate key details in a reading to increase comprehension. Students will create a list of key details found and determine their importance to the main idea. Students will also complete multiple choice questions that focus on selecting relevant supporting details that support a main idea. Week #2: Students will learn to respond to literature in writing. Students will practice creating topic sentences that summarize the main idea, adding relevant supporting details that develop the main idea, and end with a closing sentence that restates the topic sentence.
