Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner Level
On the first day, campers dive into the world of chromatography, a technique used to separate mixtures. Using coffee filters, markers, and water, students create beautiful, colorful bouquets. As they draw patterns on the filters and watch the colors spread and separate when water is added, they learn about the principles of chromatography. This experiment not only results in stunning, unique floral art but also teaches campers about the components of inks and dyes, encouraging them to think about the hidden aspects of everyday objects.

The Second day brings a touch of retro flair with homemade lava lamps. Using water, oil, food coloring, and effervescent tablets, campers create their own bubbling, glowing lamps. As they mix the ingredients in a clear container, they observe the interaction between oil and water, learning about density and polarity. The addition of effervescent tablets causes a captivating, bubbly reaction, resulting in a dynamic, colorful display. This experiment combines art and science in a way that highlights the principles of density and immiscibility, leaving campers with a deeper appreciation of how different substances interact.

Day three, we get salty with Salt Crystal Painting! Campers paint designs on watercolor paper using liquid watercolors. While the paint is still wet, they sprinkle salt over their artwork. As the paint dries, the salt crystals absorb the watercolor, creating beautiful, textured patterns. This experiment teaches campers about crystallization and the capillary action of salt absorbing liquid.

Our final day, day four, we will make walking water rainbows! Discover the magic of colors with the Walking Water Art Experiment! This fun and simple science activity uses everyday household items to demonstrate capillary action and color mixing in a visually stunning way.
