Class Experience

This one-time class will help students prepare for the college application process.

After introductions, the teacher will explain the importance of crafting an effective resume.

Topics covered will include:
- formatting tips
- the difference between a resume and the activities section on the common app (and other similar applications)
- what to include on a resume
- resumes for recommendation letters

Next, the teacher will explain how to create a college list. This will be particularly helpful for students who are unsure which schools they might apply to. The teacher will discuss factors to consider when considering a college and will provide students with a spreadsheet to help them keep organized as they compare schools.

The factors discussed will include, but are not limited to, location, cost, test scores, and available majors, etc.

Lastly, the teacher will discuss tips for writing a college essay or personal statement. Depending on the size of the class and the needs of the learners, the teacher will also discuss supplemental essay prompts.

Students will be provided with documents and spreadsheets so that they can apply the tips from the class to their respective resumes, college lists, and essays. Students will brainstorm ideas during the session, but students will not actually be creating a complete resume, college list, or college essay during this class.

While the most of the session will be an informative, "lecture-style" format, students will be encouraged to share their ideas and ask questions throughout the lesson in order to engage in discussion.

Please note: this class is designed for students (ideally juniors or seniors in high school) who have not created a resume, college list, or college essay but are seeking tips to approach the college application process. If students have a resume and tentative college list they are comfortable with and are only seeking college essay tips, this class likely is not the best fit.
