Assessment
Student writing will be assessed for clarity, style, and development.Class Experience
US Grade 11 - 12
Looking for an extra set of eyes on your personal statement or supplemental essays for your college application? In this one-time class, students will receive one-on-one tutoring, including individualized feedback about content, style, development, and grammar. Students will submit one personal statement (approximately 650 words) or up to three supplemental essays (approximately 200-400 words each) to the Outschool platform for the teacher to review before the class. The teacher will provide line-level and overall feedback on the essay(s) and will go over the feedback with the student during the session. The teacher will also recommend next steps in the revision process as needed. If students are unable to submit their essays before the start of the session, the teacher can conduct a live-read, which will entail going through the essay and offering suggestions based on the development and content. To get the best results of the session, though, students are strongly encouraged to submit their work at least 24 hours before the session. Note: Students are welcome to submit personal statements for "non-college" opportunities as well. This can include high school admission essays, scholarship essays, summer program applications, etc.
Learning Goals
Students will receive feedback on their college application essays, learning how to improve their writing to craft a more effective essay.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Please note that the teacher will offer suggestions based on the students writing, but the teacher will not write the essay. Additionally, participation in this class does not guaranteed acceptance into a particular university. If possible, please submit your work at least 24 hour prior to the session start time, as this will allow me to read the work and provide feedback. I'm happy to do a live-read if that's what best for the student, but I prefer to read and comment on the essay in advance if at all possible.
Supply List
Students will submit their writing and the teacher will provided comments on the doc and/or on a separate document.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
