Walker received their B.A. in English from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. They have been a part of a local homeschool Co-Op for the past 5 years. At the request of community parents they have led Co-Op wide reconciliation and empathy-building talks, boys' talking circles, and participated as a facilitator in teen girls coming of age retreats. They also mentor older teens in the community. Emotionally open and compassionate conversation are a cornerstone of their teaching style regardless of class topic.
Students will be expected to free write on a number of different prompts outside of class. They will also be assigned 4 total essays to read outside of class. Furthermore, I will ask them to share their essay ideas with friends/family to help their decision making process. Students should expect to devote 30mins to their homework each week. Avid writers/readers are welcome to write more and the teacher will provide additional reading to any students who express interest.
Digital device with a word processor (Microsoft Word, etc.) and/or access to Google Docs OR Pencil/pen and paper

1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
This class thrives on students sharing their lived experiences, and so the topics discussed can have a wide range. Students are encouraged to be vulnerable and talk and/or reflect on their greatest joys and triumphs as well as the greatest challenges/struggles their life. Common conversations topics include art, sports, technology, social media, and nature. They may also range into a variety of sensitive topics: death, religion, sexuality, oppression, etc. For this reason the age range is restricted to high school students.
